While the issue of opening a university in Konya was first brought to the agenda with a draft law prepared in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in 1955, the bill signed by more than half of the deputies, unfortunately, could not pass the National Education Commission. The first serious step towards having a university was taken with the Selçuk Education Institute and the Higher Islamic Institute, which were opened in 1962 under the Ministry of National Education. In order to strengthen and develop this first step, the "Association for Establishing and Sustaining the University" was founded in Konya in 1968, and as a result of outstanding efforts, the School of Engineering and Architecture, which constitutes the nucleus of today's Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, was established. Although it did not have a building, classrooms, staff and budget, This college, which started to serve in a building belonging to the Child Protection Agency (next to Gazi High School) in the 1970-1971 academic year with the efforts of the Association for the Establishment and Survival of the University, was named Konya State Architecture and Engineering Academy in accordance with Article 9 of Law No. 1418 dated July 5, 1971 . The transition process from these three schools, which constituted the preparation stage for the establishment of the university, to a more effective university took place in 1975. With the Law No. 1873 on the Establishment of 4 Universities, which came into force on April 11, 1975, it was foreseen to establish four universities in our country and Selçuk University was established based on this law. In the 1976-1977 academic year, it started its activities with 2 faculties, 7 departments, 327 students and 2 permanent faculty members, namely the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Letters. The breakthrough year for Selçuk University was 1982. With the Decree Law No. 41 dated July 20, 1982, it was decided to merge the Faculties of Science and Literature, which constituted the core of the university in the first place, into the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Selçuk Higher Teacher Training School into the Faculty of Education, Konya State Engineering-Architecture Academy into the Faculty of Engineering-Architecture, and Konya Higher Islamic Institute into the Faculty of Theology.It was decided to transform the Konya Higher Islamic Institute into the Faculty of Theology.In addition, the Faculties of Law, Medicine, Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine and the Institutes of Health, Science and Social Sciences were established; the School of Foreign Languages was abolished and transformed into Konya Vocational School; Niğde Vocational School was established in Niğde; the Girls' Art Higher Teacher Training School was transformed into the Girls' Art Education School; and the Niğde Education Institute was transformed into the School of Education. Thus, Selçuk University reached the level of 8 faculties, 4 colleges and 3 institutes at once with the “Decree Law No. 41”. Selcuk University, which experienced a rapid rise in physical, social, cultural and sports fields, especially in the scientific field until the end of the 2000s, increased the number of faculties within its body to 24 as of 2011. However, in December 2011, with the decision of the Council of Ministers and the approval of the President of that day, Mr. Abdullah Gül, Meram Faculty of Medicine, Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Education and Faculty of Theology, located in the Meram campuses of Selçuk University, were connected to Konya Necmettin Erbakan University, the second state university in Konya. With the decision of the Council of Ministers published in the Official Gazette dated April 26, 2013, Seydişehir Ahmet Cengiz Engineering Faculty, Seydişehir Vocational School, Seydişehir Health Services Vocational School, Ereğli Engineering and Natural Sciences Faculty, Ereğli Education Faculty and Konya Ereğli Kemal Akman Vocational School were also added to Necmettin Erbakan University . Today, it has 23 faculties, 7 institutes, 5 colleges, 1 conservatory.

Directorate of Communications (DoC), founded and begun to serve as per Presidential Decree no.14 published on the Official Gazette dated 24 July 2018 and no. 30488, is among the brand-new institutions of Türkiye. Setting off with an aim to ‘empower the Türkiye brand’, Directorate of Communications maintains coordinated efforts of communication with all agencies of the state adopting a holistic communication strategy, and works in cooperation with other agencies and organizations that add value to our country. One of the DoC’s main fields of activity is to make efforts for perception, narration and adding meaning and value at national and international platforms, with an awareness to maintain communication, which is at the heart of existence, on a realistic, sustainable and sound basis. Türkiye's qualified representation, which needs to be considered within this context, is of vital importance for our country as it confidently progresses toward the Century of Türkiye goals. Therefore, DoC prioritizes services enhancing the power of representation at individual and corporate level, which will provide a momentum for ‘New Türkiye’ to advance and be understood. The assurance of efficient and qualified state-nation relations for the resolution of the questions and problems of every citizen, who are the indispensable component of our country, expresses our Directorate’s another important area of responsibility. Not only the question and problem solving, but also the context of communication, which includes the sharing of ideas and opinions, is the main vein of this flow among our responsibilities. Local, national and international media are related to our Directorate in many aspects; work areas intersect. Close follow-up of international media and think tanks, evaluation, analysis, reporting and dissemination of the outputs, routine procedures such as press card and accreditation and development of these processes; are carried out by our Directorate as well as the training of professional members, improvement of working conditions and increasing the educational, instructional and stimulating contents of the mass media. It should be noted that our main principles involve performing joint work with many organizations such as public institutions, national and international media, business world, non-governmental organizations, academia and think-tanks under the effective management of the above-mentioned areas and all other activities in line with the principle of being in the field and advancing in the field.

The Disaster Journalism project (DJ project) that is being carried out within the Department of Media Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Primorska in Koper-Capodistria, Slovenia, is part of the wider activities related to media and communication, which the members of the mentioned department deal with. Since today’s media and communication conditions are challenging, the department tries to equip its diploma- and mater-degree students with various theoretical and practical skills that open up opportunities for work in media, analytics, research and business institutions and environments, in the creative industry and the sector of information-communication technologies, governmental and non-governmental organisations and alternative forms of work or employment in Slovenia and abroad. For years, individual lecturers of the department have been practicing combining their teaching work with research work or work on projects. As is also the case with the DJ project. In June 2024, a survey of three groups – professors, students, and journalists – was conducted. Since it is a small department within the faculty, which is also more boutique in size, the planned number of 100 respondents for each group was too high. During the survey, we noticed that our students and employees are targeted by various online pollsters on a daily basis, which made it even more difficult to capture their attention and attract them to participate in the survey. The collaborators of the DJ project also tried to invite potential respondents to participate with a more personal approach, but unfortunately not completely successful. This was an incentive to bring a slightly more qualitative dimension to the project in the future in cooperation with the students. Work on the project continues by addressing the topic of disaster journalism as part of the elective course Anthropology of Media, which will be taught by Vlado Kotnik and Karmen Medica for master’s students of the aforementioned department in the autumn semester of the academic year 2024/2025, more precisely from October 2024 to January 2025 Lecturer and researcher Kotnik undertakes the theoretical part, which includes a critical review of the reference academic literature in the field, while lecturer and researcher Medica undertakes the empirical part, which includes the analysis of selected examples from media practice. In both theoretical and empirical parts, the students – who have already proven themselves to be creative, initiative, and trusted partners in past projects, if guided under appropriate professional mentorship – will be involved in developing ideas and findings on the subject matter. The purpose of this work, both theoretical and empirical, is to detect and identify the strengths and weaknesses or rather advantages and disadvantages of disaster journalism practices, and consequently formulate recommendations for future curricula.

The Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) is an independent public regulatory authority established in 1994 to oversee and regulate radio, television, and on-demand media services in Turkey. It operates with administrative and financial autonomy, ensuring that media services align with ethical, legal, and technical standards. RTÜK’s mission is to safeguard freedom of expression and access to information while protecting public interests, diversity of opinion, and media pluralism. The Council monitors broadcasts, grants licenses, regulates frequencies, and enforces compliance with national broadcasting laws to maintain a fair and competitive media environment. Governed by nine members elected by the Turkish Parliament, RTÜK makes decisions based on transparency, accountability, and integrity. Its funding sources include license fees, usage fees, and a share of media service providers’ revenue, ensuring its operational independence. RTÜK is actively engaged in international cooperation, participating in global and regional platforms such as EPRA, MNRA, BRAF, IBRAF, and the OIC. Through bilateral agreements with countries like Azerbaijan, China, Serbia, and Romania, it fosters collaboration and the exchange of best practices in media regulation.
